Drop/Add

November 11, 2002
Since drop/add is upon us for next semester, I'd thought I'd add some courses you might see.

Literature as Pornography: The Anti-Bowdler
ENGL 352(1/2 unit)

I have given up on interesting students in anything but their own prurient interests, so this course gives the naughty bits overview of the Western Canon. Works include-selected works of Boccaccio, Shakespeare, De Laclos, Bronte, 18th and 19th century works. Watching films (if I can call them that) once a week is required.

P.S. I found out that this class already exists. With Foucault, no less.

Lives of Boring People
HIST 422 (1/2 unit)

Too often history has focused on the lives of people who were leaders, heroes, or interesting. This class proposes to study the too scarce evidence of the lives of boring people. We will read the diary of a farmer who did the same thing every day, a Mother who wrote a biography of her three dull children, and the evidence of boring people through boring sales receipts through the ages.

Literature in Translation
MLL, CLAS (1/2 unit)

These works are slaughtered in all English translations and its pretty much worthless for us to teach them, except youll come into contact with someone who knows it in the incomparable original. Why arent you taking Greek anyway?

Pontificating
PSCI 432 (1/2 unit)

This course gives some self-selecting students the chance to be the teacher, although a professor will be there for show. Three or four students will emerge as the leaders, and the other students will have the privilege of listening to them hijack every class and see how they can bring any subject around to their pet topics.

Please be sure to get your advisor's signature, and enjoy your pablum.
